Today in Hollywood whitewashing: Rooney Mara cast as Tiger Lily in Joe Wright’s Pan

Joe Wright’s Peter Pan origin story starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard andGarret Hedlund as Hook has potentially found its Tiger Lilly. If negotiations work out, the iconic role of the young Native American princess will be played by none other than Irish-Italian actress Rooney Mara. The film is being billed as a “new take on the classic story,” and in this case, that “new take” extends the old tale of Hollywood whitewashing characters of color. (Recently, Johnny Depp tried to skirt controversy by being “formally adopted” by the Comanche Indians before playing Tonto in the Lone Ranger film.)

Complaints against NYPD cops are down in the Bronx after precincts' declined use of stop-and-frisk

Complaints against the police in the Bronx — and citywide — have largely fallen since 2009, according to a new city report.
Even the 40th Precinct, which garnered the highest number of complaints boroughwide in 2013, recorded a 6.6% drop from 2012, according to the Civilian Complaint Review Board’s annual status report.
And an expert says the report’s numbers jibe with data on precincts’ use of stop-and-frisk, which largely declined last year.

Racist attack: Indian student's family may leave Australia

Melbourne:  It has been a long ordeal for Manrajwinder Singh and his family. The latest victim of targeted attack on Indians in Melbourne was released from hospital over two months after he was admitted in intensive care for injuries he sustained in a brutal attack.

Police released CCTV footage which shows the 20-year-old being punched in the face and beaten with a stick by teenagers. Police say the attackers were a part of a gang 'KYR' or Kill Your Rivals.

Manrajwinder's shocked family doesn't know whether to stay back in Australia or move back to India. Doctors say it will take at least a year for him to recover. His younger brother Yadwinder Singh, also a citizen of Australia, says the attack has forced him to think if it is a safe country. "I will be staying here till the treatment of my brother, but after that, I may just decide to leave Australia," says Yadwinder.

But this is not an isolated case. Manrajwinder's attack was the latest in a series of attacks on Indians in 2009 and 2010 that triggered massive protests by the community. Australia - and Melbourne city in particular - was accused of being racist and unsafe.

Britain: Islamists Create Climate of Fear to Curb Free Speech

Muslim fundamentalists in London have threatened to behead a fellow British Muslim after he posted aninnocuous image of Mohammed and Jesus on his Twitter account.
The death threats against Maajid Nawaz, a Liberal Democrat Party candidate for British Parliament, add to agrowing number of cases in which Islamists are using intimidation tactics to restrict the free speech rights of fellow Muslims in Europe. (Efforts to silence non-Muslims are well documented.)
Nawaz—a former member of the Islamist revolutionary group Hizb ut-Tahrir and co-founder of the Quilliam Foundation, a London-based counter-extremism think-tank—on January 12 posted on Twitter a cartoon of Mohammed and Jesus greeting one another ("Hey" and "How ya doin'?") with the caption: "This Jesus & Mo @JandMo cartoon is not offensive&I'm sure God is greater than to feel threatened by it الله أكبر منه".
Nawaz's tweet followed a BBC Big Questions program in which the "Jesus and Mo" cartoons, which have been around since 2005, were discussed and Nawaz was included as a studio guest.
Nawaz, who is also author of the book "Radical: My Journey out of Islamist Extremism," said he posted the image to trigger a debate among Muslims about what should and should not be acceptable within Islam.
Not in the mood for debate, furious Muslims responded by bullying and issuing threats of violence—including beheading—and also launched a petition (it quickly garnered more than 20,000 signatures) to have Nawaz deselected as a candidate for parliament.
Labour Party Councilor Yaqub Hanif of Luton, a town situated 50 km (30 miles) north of London and known as theIslamic extremist capital of Britain, said the depictions of Mohammed were "totally unacceptable" to Muslims and called on Nawaz to step down.

Allah vs atheism: ‘Leaving Islam was the hardest thing I’ve done’, The Independent

Amal Farah, a 32-year-old banking executive, is laughing about a contestant singing off-key in the last series of The X Factor. For a woman who was not allowed to listen to music when she was growing up, this is a delight. After years of turmoil, she is in control of her own life.
On the face of it, she is a product of modern Britain. Born in Somalia to Muslim parents, she grew up in Yemen and came to the UK in her late teens. After questioning her faith, she became an atheist and married a Jewish lawyer. But this has come at a cost. When she turned her back on her religion, she was disowned by her family and received death threats. She has not seen her mother or her siblings for eight years. None of them have met her husband or daughter.

Last Dry Town In Connecticut Considers Giving Up On Prohibition

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The last dry town in Connecticut is considering whether to give up on Prohibition.

Bridgewater, an affluent bedroom community of 1,700 people tucked into the hills of western Connecticut, may have more at stake in a referendum than bragging rights: The town’s average age has risen above 50 and the state is threatening to close the only school.

First Selectman Curtis Read says restaurants that serve alcohol could provide a much-needed boost.

“It would tend to enliven the town,” Read said.

Repeal has become the hottest issue in Bridgewater, with dozens attending a November town meeting on the issue. Read said it was clear people were reluctant to “show their cards” and a referendum was chosen in part for privacy, so that voters do not have to reveal opinions to neighbors. The timing of the vote, originally scheduled for Tuesday, now remains to be determined after it was postponed to make sure it complies with decades-old blue laws.
