Top Arkansas Student Denied Sole Valedictorian Honors Because of Race

source

"Kymberly Wimberly’s lowest grade at Arkansas’ McGehee High School was a B, and it only shows up on her transcript once. There were no other students at the school with marks as high as Kymberly’s, but she wasn’t the only one at graduation named valedictorian. Instead, she was forced to share the title and honor with another student whose grade point average was lower than her own. Why? According to supporters, it’s because Kymberly’s skin wasn’t the color McGehee administrators had in mind for their top student.

Wimberly is black, and though she had been informed by a school counselor that hers was the highest G.P.A. in the Class of 2011, the principal decided to name a white student with lower grades co-valedictorian. According to the racial discrimination suit filed against the school, Wimberly’s mother Molly Bratton, who works at McGehee, overheard other administrators talking about the “big mess” that would result from her daughter’s appointment as valedictorian. When Bratton tried to take up the matter with the school’s superintendent, Thomas Gathen, she was denied for not jumping through the correct bureaucratic hoops. Gathen told her that there was nothing he could do until at least a month after the school’s graduation.

According to Wimberly’s lawyer, there is a “pattern and practice of school administrators and personnel treating the African-American students less favorably than the Caucasian ones.” The school has a white majority, but not an overwhelming one. Forty six percent of McGehee’s students are black, yet there has not been a black valedictorian in the school district, located southeast of Little Rock, since 1989.

Wimberly took Advanced Placement and other honors courses at McGehee, and even gave birth to her daughter during Junior year, yet she still managed to maintain the school’s highest G.P.A. The 18-year-old, who plans to major in biology at the University of Arkansas this fall, says that school administrators have a practice of discouraging black students from taking honors and AP courses, which, in today’s competitive academic climate, are nearly-required for consideration into many four-year universities. “They tell them, among other things, that the work [is] too hard,” she explained.

Kymberly hopes her suit, which is pending federal review, will help the McGehee’s future students avoid the racial treatment she received. “My teachers thought I’d fall flat on my face, but I kept trying to succeed,” she said, adding, “This won’t be a repeat at my school.”

The West Has a Double Standard in Terrorism Cases

The West Has a Double Standard in Terrorism Cases
by Ivan Eland, July 27, 2011

The mass slaughter of innocents by Anders Behring Breivik in Norway has highlighted the selective perception of such heinous acts of terrorism by U.S. and Western media.

Although those who study terrorism cannot seem to reach a standard definition of terrorism — perhaps because past actions of their own governments might be so classified (for example, using atomic bombs or massive numbers of firebombs on civilian populations during World War II) — a simple working definition, slaughtering innocent civilians for the political reason of changing their government’s policy, seems to work just fine. By this straightforward standard, both Breivik’s action in Norway and al-Qaeda’s attack on the World Trade Center in New York would easily fit that definition. So far so good in analyzing things.

But when the Western media ascribe motivation for such incidents, however, a double standard seems to arise. Instead of focusing on Breivik’s stated identity as a right-wing Christian whose lengthy manifesto called for a Christian war to defend Europe against the threat of Muslim domination, Western media have focused on his hatred of immigration and multiculturalism (except The New York Times, which first called him a “Christian extremist,” but has since apparently changed his moniker to “anti-immigrant extremist” or “anti-Islamic extremist”). In contrast, although President George W. Bush always insisted that his “war on terror” was not a “war on Islam,” many Western media often refer to al-Qaeda as “an Islamist terrorist group” and some commentators speculate on whether Islam is an inherently violent religion, or so imply or even state.

Yet Western media sweep under the rug the religion-related motives of Breivik, Eric Rudolph, the U.S. abortion bomber, and Adolf Hitler, who clearly believed his Christian God wanted him to slaughter millions of Jews. These individuals are instead usually referred to as deranged or racist. These certainly might be apt characterizations — and we might even add brutal and ruthless — but the main point is that religious motives are downplayed in these cases, yet are accentuated in the case of al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups that are Islamic.

The Western media should be more consistent and honest in their coverage. Neither Christianity nor Islam, in most of their modern forms, despite violence or brutality in their scriptures written long ago, are inherently prone to violence or the spawning of terrorists. Religious motives played only a secondary role in explaining all of the aforementioned terrorists’ actions. In Breivik’s case, he clearly hated Muslim immigration and multiculturalism and the non-Muslim Norwegians who he thought were fostering them. In the case of al-Qaeda, the root motivation of the attacks is not Islam, but the meddling in and occupation of Muslim lands by the United States and its Western allies. So stated religious identification may play some role in the attacks, but not a dominant one.

Religion may divide people into groups based on fundamentally different and potent spiritual outlooks, but other factors, such as race, ethnicity, geography, class, and wealth can also segment populations into factions and cause conflict.

In the case of al-Qaeda, focusing on Islam is just a way of avoiding a much-needed introspective examination of U.S. foreign policy to see if unneeded, and often counterproductive, U.S. interventions in the Muslim world could be eliminated, thus taking the fire out of the movement (instead of enhancing the status of the group by expanding the war against it).

Ironically and tragically, in the case of Breivik, religious bigotry may aid his cause. Although Muslims weren’t his direct target, his manifesto decrying Muslim immigration has reopened a festering wound in Norway and Europe. Pressure could very well build to curtail future Muslim immigration so that it will not be a lightning rod for future terrorist attacks by extremists such as Breivik — a classic case of blaming the victim.

David LaChapelle Wins Pre-Trial Ruling Against Rihanna

source

A federal court has refused to dismiss David LaChapelle's copyright claim against pop singer Rihanna over a music video with scenes allegedly copied from several of LaChapelle's images. The ruling, by the US District Court in New York City, means the photographer's claim can now go to trial.

LaChapelle filed suit in February, alleging that some scenes from the video for Rihanna's hit single called "S&M" are rip-offs of sadomasochistic images he has created and published over the years. According to LaChapelle's claim, Rihanna asked various directors to create a "LaChapelle-esque video" for "S&M," and provided a story board for the video actually included prints of some of LaChapelle's photographs.

In its pre-trial ruling, the court ruled that LaChapelle made a plausible claim for infringement because the video appeared to copy protectable elements of his images, according to the judge. (Protectable elements exclude the idea and subject matter, but include factors that contribute to the originality or expression of the subject: sets, wardrobe, lighting, camera angle, mood, etc.)

For instance, the court pointed out that the video's "Pink Room Scene" and LaChapelle's "Striped Face" photograph both feature women dominating men in a domestic scene. That subject is not protectable, the court noted, because "the subjects flow naturally from the chosen idea" of sadomasochism.

But the particular way that Rihanna's video portrayed the scenes--including the set, wardrobe, "generally frantic mood" and lighting--was "substantially similar" to LaChapelle images, even if all the details were not identical, the court concluded.

"Both works share the frantic and surreal mood of women dominating men in a hypersaturated, claustrophobic domestic space. Thus, I find that an ordinary observer may well overlook any differences and regard the aesthetic appeal of “Striped Face” and the “Pink Room Scene” as the same," Judge Shira A. Scheindlin wrote in her decision.

She reached the same conclusion after comparing other video scenes to particular images by LaChapelle.

The judge dismissed Rihanna's fair use defense out of hand, saying it was so misguided and "unavailing" that the pop singer failed to raise a fair use defense at all.

But Judge Scheindlin also dismissed other claims made by LaChapelle, including trade dress violation and unfair competition claims. Those claims were based on LaChapelle's contention that audiences would confuse Rihanna's S&M video with his work. But the court said LaChapelle was merely re-stating his copyright claims, without providing enough evidence to sustain his additional claims.

With the copyright claims cleared for trial, the judge scheduled a pre-trial conference for August 10.

Now it is up to Rihanna to decide whether it is worth the risk and expense to defend against the copyright claims in front of a jury--or try to settle with LaChapelle out of court.

How Fox News Uses Hip-Hop to Create Race Panics

news article

You Maaad!—How Fox News Uses Hip-Hop to Create Race Panics

Nov. 12, 2003, was a momentous day for hip-hop. For the first time ever, a rapper sat down with Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly for what the host snidely introduced as an “intelligent conversation.”

The rapper: Cam’ron, the same guy who made purple mink coats and “no homo” fashionable.

The topic: Is gangsta rap hurting America’s children?

Cam’ron’s first words: “Pimpin’ and bitches.”

To be fair, Cam’ron was merely quoting O’Reilly, who was paraphrasing Cam’ron. The entire interview lasted all of 12 minutes, without a single conclusion drawn about whether gangsta rap had in fact hurt any of America’s children. Instead, the lasting element from the conversation was a soundbite that can still be heard in high school hallways across the nation. “You maaad!” the rapper teased O’Reilly.

With Fox News’ parent company News Corp now facing conspiracy and bribery charges in the UK, and broader race-baiting accusations at home, O’Reilly’s questions about media and morality might have been better directed at Rupert Murdoch. But the show marked an important milestone for Fox News: The discovery of a brand new “track” for the taudry practice of tapping into America’s deeply held assumptions about and fears of black people. This new ploy transformed mild think-about-our-kids rants into direct allegations of hip-hop’s role in perpetuating American racism and terrorist sentiment. Over the years, we’ve seen rappers—particularly black male rappers—from throughout the genre’s political spectrum interrogated for the content of their lyrics, their relationships with President Obama, and (in a most meta development) their sentiments about Fox News itself.

In the most recent episode, we saw something very similar to Cam’ron’s 2003 appearance—except this time it was Lupe Fiasco sitting in O’Reilly’s hot seat. And it was in fact Fiasco who was calling Obama a terrorist and criticizing his policies, leaving O’Reilly to defend the president.

This debate came shortly after Fox News created an uproar over rapper Common’s appearance at a White House poetry night, calling to attention the favorite Fox theme of fretting over a given rapper’s relationship with Obama—something to which Jay-Z, Ludacris, and Young Jeezy have all been subjected.

So if Fox is mad when a rapper affiliates with Obama, and Fox is mad when a rapper criticizes Obama, what is Fox really mad about? Is Fox’s beef with hip-hop just another form of coded language used to indirectly criticize the black community? Or is there something still more cynical behind the network’s insistence on framing hip-hop as a culture of ho-slapping wall taggers, despite the fact that it has become an enterprise of business-owning White House guests?

Even Bad News Is Good News

Beyond Fox’s vendetta with Obama, its outlandish race-baiting, and even its staunch conservatism, is one top priority: ratings. But what happens when a network has developed a rigid narrative against one of the most globally influential departments of pop culture? To simply ignore hip-hop would counter Fox’s steadfast public image of being in tune with the common American. Yet to embrace it would be counter to the reactionary brand Fox News has built. So how do you ride and strangle a horse at the same time? In Fox’s case, you simply pick a fight.

Jay-Z, Nas, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and Lil Wayne are among pop music’s crème de la crème today. To imagine them all on a show’s lineup is enough for Carson Daly to envy. Yet Fox has managed to play these artists’ music, promote segments about them, and even have guest appearances from them without paying a single booking fee. Fox’s perverse-yet-genius method of riling rappers up until they feel tempted or obligated to make an appearance on the network has allowed for a unique balance of ushering top celebrities through the network’s rotating door while letting viewers wag their fingers at them. In the end, Fox’s narrative is intact, its core following is satisfied, and its opponents can’t resist making their show clips go viral (albeit through YouTube dislikes).

But the network isn’t the only one playing the game. Over the years Fox has provided hip-hop artists a platform to reach viewers who never paid them any mind before. For some, it’s an opportunity to promote an album—as demonstrated by Cam’ron’s plug for “Purple Haze” during his closing statement with O’Reilly. For someone like Lupe, it’s a chance to prove himself for hip-hop by demonstrating the intelligence and eloquence that earns a “Lupe OWNs O’Reilly” viral video title. Even an artist like Common—who remained intentionally aloof and declined to make an appearance on the network—benefits from having his name sloshed in the mouth of a public figure like Sean Hannity.

In more recent years, Fox’s confrontations with rappers have increasingly been initiated by the artists themselves. Jay-Z, Nas, and Lupe Fiasco have all seen their latest album releases make headlines when talking heads at Fox got hot and bothered about being called out. Nas’ track “Sly Fox”—a response to the network’s racket over his controversial album title “Nigger”—was in all regards a traditional-style diss record, but the impact was much wider. Where a traditional battle track against another emcee might have earned you a spot on your local radio station, rappers have quickly learned that gunning for Fox will earn you much larger media hits.

Yvette Travillian of the Future of Music Coalition says that O’Reilly’s response to Lupe’s anti-Obama riff hints at this relationship becoming even more complex. “It appears that Fox/O’Reilly gets off from hearing a rapper publicly diss someone they are expected to support,” explains Travillian. “I think they figure since Obama is black, and Lupe Fiasco is black and a rapper, then naturally, he will support anything Obama says or does.”

But with O’Reilly going out of his way to praise Obama in order to oppose the rapper, one has to wonder just who Fox is fighting for, and why.

Protect the (White) Children

Watching Fox News cover hip-hop is like…well, it’s like listening to Sean Hannity rap—“decontextualization” doesn’t begin to describe the gear-grinding sound of Hannity attempting Common lyrics. But forget the offensive handling of a decidedly black vernacular, or the reduction of a career spanning nearly two decades into three bars, or even the transformation of a Gap-commercial rapping, “Just Wright” acting, PETA-endorsing vegan like Common into a militant cop killer.

What is most disturbing about Fox News’s developing coverage of hip hop is the subtle narrative staked at the end of each segment. The backdrop for every accusation made against someone from the hip-hop community is a story about moral virtue and an overwhelming concern for young listeners. Over the years we’ve seen rap icons transform from niche muses to household names, and their following looks more and more like the children of the white suburban demographic to which Fox caters. Hip-hop has become a convenient and likely resonant enemy for that audience.

“Hip-hop allows Fox News to play the race and the youth card at the same time,” explains Jeff Chang, author of the book “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop.” “These pseudo-controversies are modeled on the same narratives that have been used since the late 1980s.”

Truly, the demonizing of rap (or black youth culture in general) is nothing new. The aggregate of Fox’s strained relationship with people in the hip-hop community, however, is a growing narrative about upstanding moral character that is increasingly difficult to challenge. For the Hannity’s and O’Reilly’s of talk TV, the argument seems to go: I am a white person against using the N-word, and calling women the B-word.

Fundamentally, I can’t be against that. I am unequivocally for white people who markedly distance themselves from racism and misogyny. The danger, beyond inappropriately vilifying rappers who actively use the N-word, is continuing to outline a protracted culture war that relegates hip-hop specifically and black culture more broadly to bad-guy status.

Little white lies: Agnok Lueth adopts 'Daniel McClean' on his CV to try to get a fair go

news article

A SUDANESE man who has applied unsuccessfully for more than 1000 jobs has resorted to using a fake Anglo name on his resume in a desperate attempt to get work.

Former refugee Agnok Lueth, 23, who fled war-torn Sudan for Melbourne in 2004, created the resume alias "Daniel McClean" because he believed Australian employers were unwilling to give him a fair go under his real name.

Mr Lueth sent out hundreds of resumes for jobs he was qualified for, but only received callbacks on applications with the fake names.

Of the six applications with the fake name, he got five callbacks.

The Swinburne University biomedicine and commerce double degree student can speak three languages, has a favourable work history and volunteered for three years for an Australian aid organisation.

Despite meeting the job criteria for positions as a waiter, shop assistant, call centre worker and bank teller, Mr Lueth told mX he felt overlooked by employers.

"I did a test to see if it was an experience problem or something more," he said.

"I sent six resumes with my qualifications but used a different name, and I was surprised at how quickly I heard back from five of the companies for interview requests."

Mr Lueth could not say why the five calls did not lead to a job interview.

He said one employer only asked him two questions.

The Australian Human Rights Commission's Graeme Innes said there was a growing trend of immigrants adopting western names in the hope it would help them get hired.

"Unfortunately, there are elements of racism in our community and there are definitely people in Australia who make employment decisions on a racist bias," he said.

"We like to call ourselves a tolerant society, but this happens a lot more often than we think."

Since university timetable clashes forced Mr Lueth into the job hunt in 2009, he has relied on Centrelink payments and a Smith Family scholarship.

"Sometimes I just feel like giving up," he said.

"The Sudanese community is thankful for all the opportunities we're given in Australia, but we have something to make this nation defined by the strength of its diversity."

Smith Family Learning for Life team leader Anne Marmion said Lueth's efforts to secure a job had been "massive".

"When a young person has to change their name because they're discriminated against, it's an indication of bias and prejudice in our society and a fear of those who are different," she said.

A Muslim airport worker has accused airline Cathay Pacific of racism after he was refused a job interview – only to be offered one when he applied two days later using a fake white British-sounding name.

Algerian-born Salim Zakhrouf applied to Cathay Pacific for a job as a passenger services officer at Heathrow Airport.

Mr Zakhrouf, 38, who has lived in Britain since 1991 and is a UK citizen, was told by email he had not been selected for interview.

But applying 48 hours later as ‘Ian Woodhouse’ with an identical CV and home address, he was invited for an interview by the same personnel officer who had first refused him.

Undercover job hunters reveal huge race bias in Britain's workplaces

Civil servants created false identities to send CVs to hundreds of employers in sting to uncover discrimination

A government sting operation targeting hundreds of employers across Britain has uncovered widespread racial discrimination against workers with African and Asian names.

Researchers sent nearly 3,000 job applications under false identities in an attempt to discover if employers were discriminating against jobseekers with foreign names. Using names recognisably from three different communities – Nazia Mahmood, Mariam Namagembe and Alison Taylor – false identities were created with similar experience and qualifications. Every false applicant had British education and work histories.

They found that an applicant who appeared to be white would send nine applications before receiving a positive response of either an invitation to an interview or an encouraging telephone call. Minority candidates with the same qualifications and experience had to send 16 applications before receiving a similar response.

[...]

It also finds that public sector employers were less likely to have discriminated on the grounds of race than those in the private sector.

One reason for this discrepancy, according to the conclusion, is the use of standard application forms in the public sector which hide or disguise the ethnicity of an applicant. The research is also understood to have found that larger employers were less likely to discriminate than small employers

Resumes with English names more likely to be noticed

Canadians with English names have a greater chance of landing a job than those with Chinese, Indian or Pakistani names, says a new study.

In fact, after sending out thousands of resumés, the study found those with an English name like Jill Wilson and John Martin received 40 per cent more interview callbacks than the identical resumés with names like Sana Khan or Lei Li.

Native Family Allegedly Attacked by Skinheads

news article

Johnny and Lisa Bonta, a Native family from the Reno Sparks Indian Colony, became the latest victims of an apparent hate crime on May 24 when they were allegedly attacked at a gas station along I-80 in Fernley, Nevada, a border town between the Fallon and Pyramid Lake Indian reservations.

“I was pumping gas at Quick Stop on our way to Reno to look for another job when these skinheads in a blue car drove by real slow and checked us out. The driver jumped out with a baseball bat, and I asked them ‘why you holding a bat?” said Bonta. “He said ‘let’s do this’ and tried to pick a fight. I don’t know how to explain what happened—we didn’t do anything to them.”

Bonta, a Paiute member of the Reno Sparks Indian Colony, says he tried to avoid the confrontation by telling them he didn’t want to fight. He got back in the car, with his son-in-law Shane Murray at the wheel, and they quickly drove away with the carload of skinheads in close pursuit.

As they approached the freeway ramp, they were cut off as the blue car swerved in front of them, then slammed on the brakes, causing Murray to crash into it. Murray said he recognized one of the attackers as Jacob Cassell, a former classmate and son of retired Lyon County Sheriff officer Jim Cassell.

“They all jumped out of the car with baseball bats, knives and a crowbar, and we knew they were going to hurt us,” said Lisa Bonta, in an interview from Washoe Medical Center, where she was in treatment for seizures she suffers.

The fight broke out on the highway after 1 p.m. and while traffic was passing by, no one would stop to help them. Lisa and her daughter, Alyssa, were terrified watching the brutal and bloody fight as her unarmed husband and son-in-law tried to fight off the three young men in their 20s.

“I saw one of them hit my husband in the head with a bat, and the other one was trying to cut off his braid with a knife. Johnny was covered in blood and they just kept hitting him with a crow bar. They even tried to slit his throat,” she added.

“Jacob Cassell had my son-in-law on the ground in a chokehold and Shane was turning blue. My daughter was sobbing ‘they’re killing him’ and somehow she found the strength to hit Jacob in self-defense so he would release Shane.”

It was then, Lisa said, that Cassell turned his anger on her and her daughter, jumping on the hood of their car while swinging a baseball bat and cursing at them.

“I’m a 46 year-old woman with serious health problems, and I tried to defend myself, but he hit me across the lower back with his bat, calling us ‘niggers and river monsters,” said Lisa, who is Anglo. “He pointed at Alyssa and said he would rape her the next time he saw her in Fernley, where she lives.”

Meanwhile, Johnny Bonta was knocked unconscious with a bat, his nose and sinus cavities broken and bleeding, with stab wounds on his neck.

Lisa said Jacob Cassell taunted the family as the sirens approached, telling them, “You hear those cops coming? They’re not going to help you. My daddy is a cop in this town, and nothing is going to happen to me. You fucking niggers are going to jail.”

When Lyon County Sheriff’s officers arrived, they took statements and began filling out police reports with Cassell and his friends, but they did not take statements from any of the victims. When Lisa asked why they were not being questioned for a statement, no one responded. “They ignored us,” she said, before she suffered a seizure and required medical attention.

Three ambulances responded to the scene and took Lisa, Alyssa and Murray away for treatment; Murray’s injuries included a crushed elbow and broken hand.

Johnny Bonta, bleeding and barely standing after being hit in the knees with a bat, was arrested on the scene and taken to jail. He said he was not allowed medical treatment for six days while he was in the county jail, all the while uncertain about what charges had been filed against him.

Assuming he was on his way to the hospital, Lisa Bonta had no idea her husband had been arrested. She finally located her husband in jail after calling other facilities repeatedly, and was very upset that he was not given medical treatment for his extensive injuries.

“I asked them to tell me what charges he was being held on and no one would say. They said they gave him the information, but he can’t read or write, so I needed to find out. At first they said there was a bench warrant for an unpaid $367 fine, and when we made arrangements to pay that, they charged him with battery with a deadly weapon, even though it was those boys who had the weapons. The booking papers say we owe $30,367.00. ”

Lisa Bonta is outraged that their attackers were all released at the scene of the crime and were not charged despite the fact they bragged about it on Facebook on May 24, the day of the attack.

Two hours after attacking the Bontas, Josh Janiszewski of Fernley wrote, “Just laid the fists and boots to some 6′ 5” tongan dude. what you got on little guys?” at 3:13 p.m. When asked if they gave them hell, Josh responded. “Oh we did. That’s for sure!” at 3:48 p.m. “Amen,” said Jacob Cassell at 4:07 p.m.

Jacob’s mother Dee Cassell also commented, “So…who has blood? You guys need to come home to mom?” at 4:48 p.m. She later added that she gave them First Aid. “Better have ur asses at home after I did 1st aid. Don’t piss off women – they r worse than men!” she wrote at 8:00 p.m.

When asked if they got “some good licks” in, Josh said, “sent em to the hospital, they got fucked up man, thats for sure.”

Meanwhile, Johnny Bonta stayed behind bars while Lisa and her family called the jail each day, asking if Johnny had been treated for his injuries. No one would tell her his condition. One morning, she says a surly guard told her “he’ll have to get his Indian doctor if he wants treatment,” then hung up on her.

Lisa appealed to the Reno Spark Indian Colony and said she was able to get two Indian Health Service doctors to agree to visit Johnny in jail, but was told by jail officials that could not be allowed. It was not until tribal police pursued Johnny’s release that he was finally released after six days and was able to see a doctor.

The family also lost their car following the attack. The Bontas could not locate their car after the Lyon County Sheriff’s office had it towed from the scene. When Lisa called to ask about their car, she was told the police had no information. She found the car two weeks later in a small towing yard, tires flattened and in need of repair. Since Johnny has not been able to work, they cannot afford to pay the impoundment fees or have it repaired. They are now walking to all of their medical appointments in Reno. The situation has created great hardship for them and their children.

“We lost everything as a result of this attack, and now we’re homeless since we can’t go back to Fernley,” said Lisa. “The FBI took our statement last week and we know they got a copy of the video from the gas station parking lot. We are asking for a full investigation into this hate crime.”

The Bontas said since this happened, at least four other Native families have told them they too were harassed and attacked by skinheads in nearby border towns. But people told her they don’t report the incidents because they don’t believe police will help them. These follow an April 2010 attack on Vincent Kee, Navajo, in Farmington, New Mexico, where three men took Kee from a McDonald’s and shaved a swastika symbol on the back of his head and branded him with the symbol using a coat hanger.

“Someone could have died that day,” said Lisa, “and the only reason this happened is because my husband and son-in-law have brown skin. We have a 10-year-old daughter, and I have to speak out about what happened for her sake. I just don’t understand why these young boys think they have the right to randomly beat others. We have to put a stop to this kind of behavior.”

Lisa also said they are hiring an attorney. “I want the police to know they can’t deny people medical treatment just because they feel like it. Johnny could have died from a head injury, and they violated his civil rights. They should be held accountable.”

Since the story broke supporters have started a petition at change.org for the Governor of Nevada to address the situation along with other hate crimes in Nevada. A Facebook page was also created in support of the Bonta family.

Indian Country Today Media Network will continue to follow this story and is looking into any fundraising information there may be for our readers. The case is currently under investigation by the FBI. Calls to the Reno office of the FBI were not returned.

Protest Outside of Murdoch Home Calls For End to FOX News Race-Baiting

news article

Demonstrators had plenty to protest yesterday in front of News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch’s Manhattan home. Amid revelations of the UK’s News of the World phone hacking scandal, activists led by ColorofChange.org showed up at the media mogul’s front door to call for an end to FOX News’ flagrant race-baiting, as well as a Congressional investigation of Murdoch’s conglomerate News Corp.

Around 40 protesters and many more members of the press attended the 12:30 p.m. rally on 5th Avenue. After a speech from Rashad Robinson, where the Executive Director of ColorofChange.org* explained that for his organization and their allies, “It’s not just about the wiretapping, but it’s about the agenda, the ugly agenda that is focused on driving Americans apart.”

The protesters, holding signs that read “Rupert Murdoch Profits From FOX News Racism” and “Race Baiting, Phone Hacking, Anything For Profit,” then attempted to deliver a ream of paper with 110,000 signatures of citizens demanding that Eric Bolling, the FOX News host who claimed Obama chose to chug “forties” in Ireland instead of tend to tornado victims in Missouri and that the President has been hosting “hoodlum[s] in the hizzouse,” be fired. When the petition was brought to the doorman of Murdoch’s building near Central Park, he said that the building was “not accepting packages.”

Rashad Robinson explained to the crowd and cameras, “Rupert Murdoch is showing once again that he does not want to hear our voice.”

When reached for a statement, News Corp had “no comment.”

While delivery of the petition might not have been a success, calls for a closer look at News Corp practices by the federal government have been heard. Just today Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Department of Justice would launch an investigation into whether or not News Corp has violated United States laws. An undisclosed source told CNN, “We’ll be looking at anyone acting for or on behalf of News Corp., from the top down to janitors.”

the Globe and Mail singling out Chinese Canadians and allowing racist comments

The Globe and Mail wrote and article singling out Chinese Canadians for their low rates of military service. This paper ignore WW2 where many Chinese Canadians who joined the Canadian forces despite the fact they were treated as second class citizens not allowed to vote, the racist Chinese exclusion acts was law where chinese where barred from immigrating to Canada, etc. racist comments are from racist chicken hawks who most likely never served in the military, refused to join and claiming Chinese Canadians are not interested in becoming Canadian for exercising the same right to not join the military. Other comments from racist chicken hawks who neve joined the forces include telling Chinese to go back their homelands and requiring immigrants to be forced to join the military.

What It Means to be Black in Canada

What it means to be black in Canada

by Don Oliver

Senator and temporary Speaker, Senate of Canada; champion for visible minorities; member, Conservative Party of Canada.

Canada's self-image as a tolerant nation perversely allows racism to flourish.

If you are a Black Canadian, studies continue to show that you are less likely than a member of any other ethnic group to get a job or a promotion. You are more likely to get pulled over for "driving while Black," or to be discriminated against in the courts. What is more, you know that there are very few Blacks occupying the corner offices of Canadian companies, or in key roles in the academic world. And, over the past two decades, you have seen the representation of Blacks in federal, provincial, and municipal governments drop significantly. Why does this systemic racism persist? What is holding Blacks back? I believe there are three things that continue to impede our progress.

First, there's the fact that, unlike that of Blacks in the United States, the black experience in Canada has been largely ignored. For example, in Canadian history books, there is little mention of the fact that slavery once existed in the territory that is now Canada. Most Canadians don’t know that segregation was accepted in many parts of this country well into the 1960s. They believe the myth of a Canadian tradition of tolerance because most history books gloss over the overt racism that has afflicted Blacks in Canada throughout our country’s existence.

Equally significant is the fact that few Canadians are aware of the many contributions that Blacks have made to Canadian history, beginning with Mathieu da Costa, a Portuguese navigator and explorer, who arrived here in 1605 in the company of Samuel de Champlain. They have never heard of William Hall, who became the first Canadian, and the first person of African ancestry, to receive the Victoria Cross.

They don't know that the "The Real McCoy" was a Black Canadian engineer named Elijah McCoy, whose inventions for lubricating the engines of ships, trains, and factories were patented worldwide. And they're unaware of the achievements of Portia White, who broke the colour barrier in Canadian classical music, performing in more than 100 concerts around the globe. These Afro-Canadians, and many more, made their mark on Canada, all during times characterized by pervasive racism. And these great Canadians not only endured, they succeeded.

The second factor holding Blacks back is the existence of old and tired stereotypes stemming from our legacy of slavery and segregation. For instance, segregation meant there were white schools and Black schools; white churches and Black churches; barbers for white people and barbers for Blacks. In other words, segregation forced people to look at our differences, not the things we shared in common. It led some people to conclude that Black was not as good, as worthy, or as able as white – that Black was inferior to white.

Still today, we watch television and see Blacks portrayed as poor, with no chance for success, or as criminals or inmates in prison. What is the impact of this constant stream of demeaning images on young Black people? It's not pretty. I have seen the lack of self-esteem, the shame in our culture, and the humiliation at the place we have been assigned in our own country.

The third thing that holds Blacks back is ourselves. As human beings, we are defined by our circumstances. I was born of a poor Black family in Nova Scotia shortly before the Second World War. My father was a janitor at a university. He swept floors and cleaned washrooms to make a mere $25 a week. He had a wife and five children to support. My poverty has helped to define me. Ours was also the only Afro-Canadian family in an all-white university town. That defined me too. It gave me a powerful drive to achieve. And, combined with my family tradition, it underscored the importance of books, learning, and education – all of which saved me from the monotony of poverty.

In the same way that circumstances shape individuals, I believe that circumstances have a tremendous influence on a group of people. Our history of slavery and segregation continues to erect barriers that stand in our way of being accepted as equals. To break down those barriers once and for all, Blacks must become more powerful agents for change. We must come together to leverage the power of our collective voice.

I remember a time, not so long ago, when Afro-Canadians did just that. In fact, we felt compelled to make change happen. As the acclaimed Canadian author Lawrence Hill wrote:

For people like me, being Black and having access to a good education carried certain obligations. It wasn't good enough to get A's in school – you also had to ball up your fists and charge into battle if anybody used the word "nigger." In the workplace, it wasn't good enough to merely succeed professionally. You had to change the world, too.

I have witnessed this powerful force for social change first hand. All the members of my family, on both my father’s and my mother’s side, have devoted more than three generations to working for the uplifting of mankind, and, in particular, Blacks. I have seen what hope can do, most recently, with the election of U.S. President Barack Obama. I believe we urgently need to renew that sense of hope for Afro-Canadians today.

That's because Blacks in Canada still have a long way to go. We must embrace our proud heritage, our true potential, and our hope for the future. We must work together to put an end to racism now. It's clear to me that no one else is going to do it for us.

Racist behavior toward Asians arouses concern in L.A.

News article

Recent racist behavior displayed by some students at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), against Asians has aroused concern in the Asian community here.

California Assembly Member Mike Eng has sent a letter to UCLA Chancellor Gene D. Block Tuesday, expressing concern and requesting appropriate action.

The case in point is the Ching-Chong-Ling-Long Gourmet Takeout, a new Asian food delivery service catering to Westwood, where UCLA is situated. The outlet got its name from one of the most memorable lines of Alexandra Wallace's anti-Asian tirade that appeared in March.

Wallace was a former UCLA student who ranted about the "hordes of Asian people that UCLA accepts" in a three-minute video. Wallace specifically complained about students in the school library using their cellphones to call their families in Japan after the tsunami hit just days before.

At one point, Wallace -- who later withdrew from UCLA -- crudely mimics an Asian student answering the phone by saying, "Ohhh! Ching chong ling long ting tong!"

"I write this letter to express serious concern over the recent actions by a select number of UCLA students. It is my understanding that these students partnered with a local restaurant and established a delivery service by the name of 'Ching-Chong-Ling-Long Gourmet Takeout,'" Eng's letter said.

"California is home to a broad range of diverse communities. Acts of intolerance such as these are senseless and have a profoundly negative effect on the community as a whole," the letter said.

"As a member of the California State Legislature and the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, I urge your office to look into this matter immediately and take appropriate action," Eng's letter said.

Ching-Chong-Ling-Long Gourmet Takeout was founded by Rachel Lee, owner of The Palace Restaurant in Brentwood, and four UCLA students who run the campus delivery service UCLA Munchies.

Lee told the press that she initially hesitated to use the name for the delivery service, but the students convinced her otherwise.

"I said, 'Are you sure this is OK?' My initial reaction was that people might get offended," Lee was quoted by the local media as saying. "But they said it was perfectly fine among UCLA students."

A statement on the delivery service's website explains: "We believe that the best way to combat intolerance is through a positive cultural experience mixed in with a healthy serving of humor, and hope that after you try us, you too will feel that way."

Lee's website uses the following wording to attract Asians: "Welcome to Ching-Chong-Ling-Long Takeout, Westwood's newest, sexiest, drop-dead delicious Asian-food Delivery. We at The Palace Restaurant Seafood & Dim Sum started CCLL Takeout in order to provide UCLA students/staff with quality, affordable Asian foods."

The Periscope Post suggested that Lee didn't do her homework. "You might have thought that Wallace's public shaming and subsequent self-removal from school would have brought a new era of communication about race relations to the UCLA campus," the paper said.

However, the paper said, after all, Wallace's widely-viewed rant wasn't an isolated incident in the California public university system -- about a year before she took to the Internet, several fraternities at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) hosted a "Compton Cookout," a "ghetto-themed" off-campus party to mock Black History Month, a celebration of achievements by African Americans.

Boycott the SyFy Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy screening of the racist "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

"On Thursday August 11th, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy with the sponsorship of the SYFY Channel plans to screen "Breakfast at Tiffany's" free for the public. This 1961 film features a blatantly-racist, minstrel-show, buck-toothed portrayal of a Japanese American, played by Mickey Rooney which has for decades offended the Asian-American community and its allies. Please boycott this film, the SyFy Movies with a View series, and let people know that despite direct communication from the NY Asian American community, the BBPC is committed to showing this horribly offensive film, which it calls a "beloved" "American classic". The film series is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

In 2008, a similar public outdoor screening was successfully aborted by the city of Sacramento in response to protests over the yellowface Mr. Yunioshi caricature. The controversy over Mickey Rooney's bumbling portrayal is not new, and the BBPC and SyFy should be aware of the impact of putting this offensive portrait on the big screen.

Why any publicly funded organization in a city where 1-in-8 residents are Asian-American or any channel with a huge Asian-American viewership would choose to show a film with a racist caricature like this is beyond me. It's not funny; It's not classic; It's not beloved to us. By screening this film, the organizers are sanctioning the racism it contains, and subjecting new audiences (including children and Asian-Americans) to a minstrel show of racist ideology. It's 2011. It's New York. Do we still have to fight the hostile, hurtful world of 1961 Hollywood?"

Hollywood rules of Racism and White Supremacy

http://mrfuckhollywood.blogspot.com/

Rule # 1 The number one racist rule of Hollywood is "ALWAYS REINFORCE the STEREOTYPE" no matter how trivial. This rule works both ways. It perpetuates the theory of white supremacy and it can perpetuate the racist stereotypes whites created to make blacks and other non-whites look inferior.

Rule # 2 The RACE MIXING rule states that if a black character has, hints at, or attempts sex with a white woman he must be beaten, humiliated, or killed. Also, black on black relationships should be seen as uncommon. A strong black family unit must be broken up or damaged.

Rule # 3 The "LANDO COWARDICE ACT" states that racist Hollywood filmmakers, must make sure blacks look weak and act cowardly and if possible put the hero in jeopordy.

Rule # 4 The "DROOL RULE" states that a black character must sweat profusely and drool saliva or blood.

Rule # 5 The "DIE SCREAMIN NIGGA!" rule states that a black character must always die screaming and begging for help.

Rule # 6 The SAVED BY THE WHITE MAN rule states that the white man must be seen as the savior of mankind whenever possible, thus perpetuating the theory of white supremacy. No matter if it is one person, a whole tribe, a nation or the world, they must be saved by the white man!

Rule # 7 The RENAISSANCE RULE (or rebirth) this rule states that America's racist past must be re-written into something more socially tolerable for whites. This includes the civil rights era, slavery, colonialism and even the past few decades. This rule aids in the whitewashing of the past, and it creates and updated visual representation of the past for future generations.

my addition to the above rule

Rule # 8 The RACEBENDING RULE this rule states that white actors/actresses must be hired instead of non-white actors/actress when remaking or making a movie adaptation of a previous story and historical event that has non-white protagonist leads and action heroes. Non-white actors/actresses are not allowed to get lead, protagonist roles nor portraying themselves. They can be only hired for racist, stereotyping, humiliating, servile and dehumanizing roles

Racist Hollywood hates to see the black guy make it out of the war zone. They constantly reinforce racist stereotypes of blacks in combat. The worst part about the Veitnam flicks is the fact that at the same time back home, blacks were being treated like shit and forced to fight "the whiteman's" battles overseas. Man fuck hollywood!

In the 80's it was common to show blacks and black neighborhoods as violent crime areas, and blacks were to be treated like animals and 2nd class citizens. Don't believe me, watch a Dirty Harry movie.

The princess and the frog: The propaganda machine known as Walt Disney Pictures, strikes again with a two pronged attack. First they attack the black family unit by killing Tianna's father off and showing her "make it" without a strong black male influence and to top it off, she ends up with a prince from some made up place, why can't he be from some made up place in Africa? Second, in an attempt to rewrite history, the propagandists don't make any mention of the rampant racism and bigotry that was prevalent in the Jazz era south.

Quebec bottled water company pulls ads after outcry

Date: Thursday Jul. 7, 2011 7:28 PM ET
A Quebec-based bottled water company is bringing its ad campaign to an early end following public criticism over its use of native imagery.
Jim Delsnyder, Eska Water's president and CEO, said in a statement Thursday that his firm "is bringing an immediate halt to its current advertising and marketing campaign" due to "concerns that have been expressed over the past few days."
The ads appeared on television and in print and featured three men wearing headdresses and war paint, and carrying spears and blow guns, who are said to be defending the purity of the company's product.
Those ads would be removed "as quickly as possible," Delsnyder said, adding that he "wishes to apologize to all those who may have found the campaign and its images disrespectful."

Native Group Wants ‘Racist’ Water Ad Pulled

Update: The Quebc based bottle water company is pulling the ad after public outcry

blog update

A Toronto-based bottled water company has come under fire for a TV commercial that has representatives of the Algonquin Nation demanding a retraction of the ad, which they say feeds “old prejudices” about aboriginal people.

The ad, by Eaux Vives Canada Inc. for its Eska brand of bottled water, shows three men dressed as aboriginal warriors, so-called “Eskan Warriors,” who have been charged with “protecting the purity of Eska water for 8,000 years.” The legend is made up for the purpose of the ad.

In the 30-second spot, which can be viewed on YouTube, actors of dubious aboriginal background fire an arrow toward a Caucasian man about to mix orange juice with Eska, the message being that the juice would tarnish the purity of the water.

The Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council, representing the Algonquin Nation in Quebec, says the ad is offensive to them.

Citizen journalist and Mohawk from Kanehsatake, Clifton Nicholas, discusses his reaction to a new advertising campaign by Eska Water, a Canadian bottled water company. Nicholas is leading a boycott of Eska water because of a culturally insensitive ad called "Eskan Warriors" which has three non-aboriginal men, dressed as natives, with menacing faces, trying to protect the water's purity.

The movie extraordinary measures which was released in January 2010. it is based on true story of a doctor who cured Pompe disease. the doctor is a Taiwanese doctor

In his review, Mr. Ebert writes:

Dr. Robert Stonehill doesn’t exist in real life. The Pompe cure was developed by Dr. Yuan-Tsong Chen and his colleagues while he was at Duke University. [...] Harrison Ford, as this film’s executive producer, perhaps saw Stonehill as a plum role for himself; a rewrite was necessary because [Ford] couldn’t very well play Dr. Chen. The real Chen, a Taiwan University graduate, worked his way up at Duke from a residency to professor and chief of medical genetics at the Duke University Medical Center. [Chen] has been mentioned as a Nobel candidate.
